Hinoe Castle was the the local feudal lord Arima’s mansion during the medieval to early Edo era.  It was believed to be built in the 14th century, Nambokucho era.

Hinoe Castle included the main enclosure at 78 meters high, second enclosure in the east and third enclosure in the west.  The front gate was in the second enclosure.  There was a dry moat in the north of the main enclosure.  Two rivers, Urakuchi-gawa in the west and Ote-gawa in the east, which also led to the ocean, made up the strong defenses.

The report from Jesuits stated that the feudal lord Harunobu Arima had ordered the construction of stone walls and stairs, along with the interior refurbishment in 1590 (Tensho 18).  A Spanish merchant (Bernardino de) Avila Giron visited Hinoe Castle in 1595 (Bunroku 4) and left detailed notes that there were many tea rooms and gardens in the complex.

Archaeological excavations of the second enclosure unearthed the ruins of stone walls, stairs and pottery that had been demolished and buried.  The stairs were over as long as 100 meters long, straight from the front gate to the main enclosure.  It was similar to the ones in Azuchi Castle in Shiga prefecture built for Nobunaga Oda.  There were many stone stupas (pagodas) unearthed on the north side of the stairs.  The stairs were made of those stupas such as the Hokyo and the Gorin stupas that existed in Buddhist temples.  This indicated Arima’s political power to rid the country of Buddhism and protect Christianity.

By the side of the stairs, stone walls using cut stones were also excavated.  Ashlar masonry technique was so unique at the time of the castle’s construction in Japan.  This indicated that there were trade relations with Southeast Asia.

The excavated pottery included a lot of Chinese and Southeast Asian made craft that were exchanged by trading, together with domestic pottery made in the 14th through 16th century.  At the same time, a lot of unglazed brown ware pottery called “Hajiki” was also unearthed.  “Hajiki” was used for rituals and wassails and that showed the strong bond between Arima and retainers through the rituals.  Also, excavated gilded roof tiles showed influence from the central government.  Gilded roof tiles were often used for the castles built for Hideyoshi Toyotomi.

On May 3rd, 1982 (Showa 57), Hinoe Castle Ruins were designated as a National Historic Relic Site.
